Having Crohn’s doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be declined for cover, but it may influence how much you pay, or whether certain conditions related to Crohn’s are excluded from your policy.
What is Crohn’s disease?
Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It causes inflammation in the digestive tract, which can lead to symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, weight loss and fatigue. It’s a long-term condition that can fluctuate between periods of flare-ups and remission.
Why is Crohn’s disease a factor in life insurance?
While Crohn’s isn’t typically life-threatening, it’s a chronic condition with the potential for complications such as intestinal blockages, fistulas, or the need for surgery. Because of this, insurers may consider it a moderate to significant risk depending on the individual’s experience of the disease.
In some cases, Crohn’s disease can also be linked with other conditions such as anaemia or liver problems, which may also be considered during the underwriting process.
How do insurers assess Crohn’s disease?
If you declare a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease on your application, insurers are likely to ask for more detail. You may be asked:
When you were first diagnosed.
The frequency and severity of flare-ups.
Any treatments or hospital admissions.
Whether surgery (e.g. bowel resection) has taken place.
The date of your last flare-up or any periods of remission.
Depending on the answers, the insurer may ask for a report from your GP or specialist in order to better understand your condition.
How do insurers respond to Crohn’s disease?
When assessing an application for life cover, insurers’ responses can vary, but here are some general outcomes:
Mild cases with long periods of remission may be accepted on standard terms or with a small premium increase.
Moderate to severe cases, especially where complications have occurred, may lead to higher premiums or policy exclusions.
Recent flare-ups or surgeries could result in the insurer postponing a decision about whether to offer life insurance until more time has passed.
Some insurers may be more willing than others to provide you cover, so it may be worth shopping around different companies.
What exclusions might apply?
Some life insurance policies may include exclusions related to Crohn’s disease, particularly if there have been significant complications. For example, death from complications related to Crohn’s or its treatment may be excluded.
It’s important to review your policy documents and check with the insurer or adviser/broker to understand exactly what is covered and what is not.
The importance of full disclosure
Even if your symptoms are currently well managed, you should disclose any diagnosis of Crohn’s disease when applying for insurance. This includes previous flare-ups, treatments, or surgeries, even if they happened years ago.
If your insurer later finds out that this information wasn’t declared, they may be able to refuse a claim. Being honest ensures your policy is valid and your loved ones are protected.
